While there isn’t the option to romance companions in Avowed as you’d hope in an RPG of this scale, you can still flirt with them in dialogue options, and even end up with one of them at the end of the game.
How to romance Kai in Avowed
Though you won’t be able to form a relationship with any of the companions, you can ‘romance’ Kai and potentially end up with him at the end of the game. To do this, you need to prioritize Kai, making sure to speak to him whenever you’re at camp and appease him on quest decisions. You also need to complete Kai’s personal quest, Battle Scars, which explores Kai’s grief for his deceased friend, Tama.
At the end of completing Kai’s personal quest, you can ask him how he is, instigating dialogue where you can tell Kai how you feel, and this is where you can choose to tell Kai he is a good friend, or that there are deeper feelings. If you choose to tell him about your feelings, then he will reciprocate, and you can be together when your journey concludes.
Though you won’t get the traditional romance options or be able to romance Kai throughout your time in the game; once the game ends, there is a very sweet image during the epilogue that shows you and Kai sitting under a blossom tree.
